Preview HTC Evo 4G Wi-max Smart-phone

The Google bribe to the attendees was to giveaway to everyone an HTC Evo, the not-yet-released 4G WiMax phone. The mobile arms-race steps up a gear.

It's a $449 phone. A $449 phone!! Admittedly  with very impressive specs, if you can find 4G coverage and a data plan costing less than the BP Gulf cleanup operation...

More than one client of mine has HTC Windows Mobile phones for corporate use. Nice phones, good screen, cheap plastic cases and keyboards, horrible OS experience!

The HTC Evo is a pretender to the Smart-phone crown. Nudge along, iPhone and Nexus One, make way, make way! Only just on sale in the US and only connected to Sprint 4G; we might get it in Europe by the end of Summer.

  • Snapdragon QSD8650 1GHz processor
  • large 4.3″TFT touchscreen display with 480 x 800 pixel resolution
  • 1GB of ROM and 512MB of RAM
  • an 8GB microSD card
  • an 8.0 MP camera and a 1.3 megapixel front facing camera
  • HDMI out so you can plug it into the TV. What the picture looks like blown up to 40 or 50 inches...?
  • 802.11b/g WiFi (of course)
  • Android 2.1 OS, which should be updated to, or upgradeable after pruchase to, 2.2 which is now out. This will offer sufficient enterprise support for Exchange and security to keep HTC in the corporate game (or so they hope).
That's more computing power than put the Space Shuttle in orbit or the first nuclear power on-grid.

Is it enough to raise it above the 'me-too' mobiles? Early adopters favour the thing, whether the mass-market takes to it has yet to be seen.  RC
