With so much of our daily lives now conducted via the Internet, from paying bills to accessing medical services, on-line banking, shopping; if you can't trust your browser to take you to the right site, what do you do? And what do you do when it is the right site but the browser thinks otherwise? It's all to do with certificates and identification

Windows has any number of programs such as Winzip, and in-built features - 'compressed folders'  - for handling 'zipped' or compressed archive files; anything ending in .zip. Where various Linux distributions may come with Squeeze or File Roller, the zip format is not native to Linux and you will also need the compression routines to handle such files. Fortunately, Linux has both zip and unzip programs.

Wordpress is the most used blogging platform on the planet. It's easy enough to set-up your own site you understand how to set-up a web server (if not see here and here) and run the installer. You can load up lots of content very quickly. And then you notice the page addresses are completely useless. So you change them - in Wordpress terms, the permalinks. You want something sensible like the page title at the end of your URL's Then you get: /%postname%/ 404 not found No, you're not going crazy, you're not a useless web master. But you may have missed a step. It can be fixed.

I was recently sent a query about whether to use WordPress or Drupal . It was from a non-technical person in the voluntary sector, so there was no point writing a technical article. I couldn't assume anything about their level of technical knowledge. I did throw in Joomla as well, as it's another website tool that is often mention in the same breath, often by the same kind of line manager (knowing just enough to be dangerous) who raised this question to my poor correspondent. Which is why I told them this...

Or perhaps I should have called this "where's that dam' button gone?" In Internet Explorer 11, the compatibility view button is removed from the address bar; supposedly because document modes are now deprecated. But there's a long tail of development in which X-UA-Compatible meta tags are not or cannot be added to website HTML headers. However, what if some sites still don't render properly?

(Nameserver) A name server is a computer server that hosts a network service for providing responses to queries against a directory service. It maps a human-recognizable identifier to a system-internal, often numeric identification or addressing component. ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nameserver ) Accurate but dull. Nameservers work behind the scenes to translate the web address that you type in to a machine address that will actually serve up the page. Nameserver records are a rather complicated subject that we'll barely scratch the surface of here.

You my have other software running on your server and want to keep your root folder tidy, so instead of the root directory of your web server:
